Riyaaz - The Indian Music Society of Maitreyi College is a group of young aspiring musicians who have proved their grit in the IMS circuit of the University of Delhi. It presents a broad spectrum of music ranging from classical, semi-classical, sufi, folk, ghazal and light music.
Riyaaz has the most dedicated and talented set of students who strive for excellence. It aims to help these students share their abilities and form a stronger musical base. The society provides the students with a platform to hone their performing skills by actively participating in various competitions held in different colleges under the University of Delhi and other renowned institutions like IITs, AIIMS, Indraprastha University, BITS Pilani etc.
Alongside participating and hosting such competitions, we have been successful in climbing up the ladder and making it profound among other college societies of the University of Delhi. Riyaaz has also been awarded THE BEST MUSIC SOCIETY in the year 2016. Living in a country with diverse cultures, one finds our nation's art and music to be richer since time immemorial. Music as an art form keeps us grounded to aesthetics and emotions. The sense of feeling is what is fundamental to music. Hence, Indian Classical Music derives its root from this concept. Setting up an Indian Music Society in a college is a way to preserve our rich culture and pass it on to our future generations. Through this society, we make ourselves known to the world of classical music and understand the minimalism of our rich heritage.
Riyaaz organises its Annual fest Swarotsav every year on our college's cultural fest,Rhapsody. It has three competitions named Aarohi- The Vocal Solo, Shivanjali- The Indian Classical Choir and Swaragini- The Instrumental Solos. This further helps us form a deeper connection, learn as well as appreciate many talented students from across the University of Delhi and other Universities also.
Annual Composition: Every year riyaaz composes an original composition in the classical music choir. Our Annual Composition. This year was the combination of Raag Rageshree and Raag Malkauns. Rageshwari means "Queen of ragas" whereas Malkauns is believed to be created by goddess Parvati. The choice of these Raags coincides with our college being an all Women’s college. Hence, Indian Classical Music derives its root from this concept. Setting up an Indian Music Society in a college is a way to preserve our rich culture and pass it on to our future generations. Through this society, we make ourselves known to the world of classical music and understand the minimalism of our rich heritage.
