The Department of Sociology, Maitreyi College started in 1976 and currently offers B.A. (Hons) Sociology and B.A. (Prog) Sociology. The department trains its students in the art of ‘doing sociology’ through a balanced blend of curricular and co-curricular activities. These include the publication of an magazine, Annual Inter-college departmental meet (Imagine), field trips and research, lectures, seminars and talks by experts in various fields, film screenings and reviews, book discussions, photo competition and exhibitions.
All department activities are organised by the Sociology Association which comprises of the Association-in-charge (faculty), President, Vice-president, Treasurer, General Secretary and Joint Secretary (students). The office bearers are elected by the students at the beginning of each year. In addition, there are other teams like PR, hospitality, social media, volunteer, design and creative which gives ample opportunities to students to pursue their interests.It also provides the opportunity for them to be versed in other skill sets.
The Department publishes an annual magazine called Sociologue: आओ बात करें which was launched in the year 2015 as a bi-annual Newsletter and converted into an annual magazine in the year 2021. The magazine strives to shed light on and critically engage with different aspects of social reality. The aim of the magazine is to impel its readers to view society and its various aspects through a sociological gaze, question the taken-for-granted realities and interrogate every existing phenomena rather than be complacent about it. We believe that awareness is the first step towards meaningful action. The magazine is managed by a student editorial board (selected through a written test) under the guidance of a faculty advisor and an editor-in-chief.
