About the Department
The Physics department at Maitreyi College was established in 1983 and has since been dedicated to creating a dynamic, inclusive, and competitive environment for students and stakeholders. The department comprises 14 highly qualified and motivated faculty members who teach Physics to B.Sc.(Hons.) Physics and B.Sc.(Prog.) Physical Sciences students. The department also offers GE papers to students of B.Sc.(Hons.) Chemistry and B.Sc.(Hons.) Maths. With the implementation of the NEP syllabus, the department also teaches SEC/VAC courses to students from various other courses under the cluster college scheme. The department features well-equipped laboratories for performing Mechanics, Electronics, Optics, Nanotechnology, and PCB designing experiments along with a dedicated Ballistic Galvanometer lab. The department has a store room, 3 faculty staff rooms, and 2 ICT-enabled lecture rooms. A departmental library is maintained by designated lab staff which has books donated by faculty members and student-prepared laboratory manuals for quick reference. The department of Physics was one of 4 science departments of Maireyi College which was recognized with Star Status by the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India in 2017. The department keep students informed about internship opportunities and encourage participation in summer and winter schools at institutions like TIFR, BARC, IISC, and ISRO. The department organizes talks by eminent scholars to keep students updated on advancements in Physics and related fields. Distinguished alumni are invited for interactions, and many alumni are employed in sectors like defense, finance, police and research. Faculty expertise spans areas such as astrophysics, condensed matter, particle physics, atomic & molecular physics, and optical physics. The department fosters a progressive working environment by promoting values of creativity, innovation and teamwork.
