About the Department

The Department of Botany is involved in teaching and learning activities in two main courses - B. Sc. (Hons.) Botany and B. Sc. (Prog.) Life Sciences catering to above 400 students. A total of 18 qualified teachers and 7 laboratory staff members are working dedicatedly for the overall growth of the department. Infrastructure of the department includes a tissue culture facility, 3 laboratories, 1 research laboratory, a museum & herbarium, botanical garden and a store to look after the chemicals and consumables required for conducting practicals and research. The faculty members are actively engaged in academic and research activities. Every year, faculty members publish several books, book chapters and research papers. They also support students in summer internship projects and annual research projects. In addition, 4 faculty members are involved in supervision of Ph.D. scholars. In keeping pace with modern technologies for teaching and learning methods, the department has incorporated the use of digital teaching tools like jamboard, digital tablet, OERs (Open Educational Resources) etc. Students are oriented towards developing various soft skills like creative writing, team spirit, coordination, decision making, organizational skills and collaboration skills through active participation in various activities like classroom presentation, departmental e-newsletter- “Vitti”, intra- & inter college competitions, botanical society “Blossom” events and NSS activities. The core value of the department to inculcate environmental consciousness & thoughtful action is reflected through our best practices that includes energy conservation, plantation drives and conservation of medicinally important plant species. The department has also established a skill enhancement center for Mushroom culture and technology “CHATRAKA” wherein various mushrooms such as Pink oyester, grey oyester, white oyester and button mushrooms have been cultivated successfully.

 

Some of the important visions of the department for the near future are:

  • To improve academic progress.
  • To improve our research output.
  • To initiate collaboration with other institutes.
  • To enhance our infrastructure and increase the intake of doctoral students.
  • To foster innovation and entrepreneurship by incorporating new skill enhancing papers like Mushroom Cultivation/Floriculture/Food & Nutrition.
